Table Mountain
Table Mountain is one of the most famous landmarks in South Africa. It is situated near Cape Town. It is a flat-topped mountain that attracts many tourists.
The mountain is famous for its flat plateau which is almost 3 square kilometers. The plateau is surrounded by very steep cliffs. To the east is Devil’s Peak and to the west is Lion’s Head. The mountain is steeping dramatically towards the Table Bay harbor and the city.
The highest point on the mountain is Maclear’s Beacon. It stands at 1,086 meters above the sea level. It was constructed by him in 1865 for survey purposes. The plateau is divided in two by the “Flat Stone George” which is a popular thing to see there. Very often the mountain is covered by clouds that form when air coming from the south-east meets the colder air form the slopes. The clouds that result are called table cloth clouds. There is a local legend that whenever there are clouds on the mountain there is a smoking competition going between the Devil and the famous pirate Van Hunks.
The mountain and its plateau are popular places for tourists. There is the Table Mountain Cableway that brings passengers from the lower station on the Tafelberg Station to the top of the mountain. The cable station is situated on the western end of the plateau. From there tourists can enjoy the beautiful views over Cape Town, Table Bay, Robben Island and the Atlantic. The cableway was constructed in 1926 and was renovated in 1997. The modern cars offer a 360 degree view during the travel and can rotate. About 65 passengers can use the cableway at the same time. Moreover, there is a restaurant, viewpoints, curio shops and various trails starting from the upper stop of the cableway.
Car rental companies that operate in Cape Town and South Africa are Hertz, Budget, Avis and Europcar.
