This year International Federation of Association Football’s (abbreviated FIFA in French) 19^th world football championship took place in South Africa. It took place from the June 11^th to July 11^th. South Africa is the fisrt African nation to host this global event.

Teams

The teams that took part in the world finals in South Africa were selected through a worldwide qualification tournament. It began in 2007 in groups where the first two teams continued on. 16 teams went to the finals where there is direct elimination. Out of the 32 teams that went to finals the majority was European- 13 teams; then African- 6, South American- 5, 4 Asian, 3 from Central and North America and the team of New Zealand.

Stadiums

Ten stadiums were used for the games of the World Cup: in Johannesburg (2), Cape Town, Durban, Pretoria, Port Elizabeth, Polokwane, Nelspruit, Bloemfontein, and Rustenburg. The final game between the Netherlands and Spain took place in Soccer City, Johannesburg.

Winner

The winner of this world cup was Spain. Spain managed to continue its winning streak after winning the European championship in 2008. For the Netherlands this was the third time in finals. The game ended 1-0 when Andres Iniesta scored for Spain in the 116^th minute, during the second 15-minute extra time.

Vuvuzelas

A new craze during these world championship finals was the vuvuzela. This South African 65-centemeter plastic tube produces a loud monotone note. In no time the vuvuzela became highly popular and came it the colors of every team on the championship. The noise produced by all these horns during matches caused many spectators, players and officials to complain.

The cable station is situated on the western end of the plateau. From there tourists can enjoy the beautiful views over Cape Town, Table Bay, Robben Island and the Atlantic. The cableway was constructed in 1926 and was renovated in 1997. The modern cars offer a 360 degree view during the travel and can rotate. About 65 passengers can use the cableway at the same time. Moreover, there is a restaurant, viewpoints, curio shops and various trails starting from the upper stop of the cableway.
